When I ask clients and readers what they want to learn about, they often say, “I want to attract more traffic to my website.”

That’s a terrific goal. But many website owners use outdated or expensive techniques to drive traffic to their websites.

red checkTraffic Mistake #1. Aiming for Page Rank. Often SEO consultant hold out this promise. So before you hire an SEO consultant, or optimize on keywords, here’s a cautionary tale.

Have you heard the story of the inebriated gentleman who had lost his car keys? He was looking for them under the street light. When a passerby asked, “Where did you lose your keys?” he pointed to a spot several feet away, well outside the circle of brightness.

“So why are you looking here?” asked the passing stranger, whose only drink that day had been coffee.

“Because it’s too dark over there.”

Go ahead and laugh, but a lot of folks use this strategy for their Internet marketing. Dozens of times, I hear someone saying, “I couldn’t get a good ranking with life coach…but I can get to a Page 1 on google with basket weaving classes. OK, that’s not exactly what I do, but I am Number One.”

I can’t use a real example so , while this one may seem far-fetched, you can get the idea. The problem is: very few people are searching for coaches when they click on “basket weaving.” And I suspect not a whole lot of folks are looking for “basket weaving” anyway.

red checkTraffic Mistake #2: Surfing for Link Swaps.

Do you ever get a message inviting you to participate in a link swap? Say no. It doesn’t help your rankings…wastes time and (if you’re the one doing the asking) annoys everybody.

What to do instead? I’m discussing alternative strategies on my next teleseminar:
