When you think of attracting traffic to your website, what comes to mind: SEO? Keywords? Twitter? Articles?
Any of these methods may indeed bring you traffic, but here are a few surprising ways that many business owners often do not consider.
(1) Create content. And more content. Just adding pages to a website and keeping them updated will draw traffic. That’s why some enthusiastic newbies find themselves getting visitors to sites even before they learn about search engine optimization or keywords. It’s what I did (by accident) when I was new. I wrote pages of articles, tips and information… and then wrote some more.
(2) Develop a simple, straightforward navigation system for your website. Have you created a path for your visitors to follow? Do the pages makes sense in relation to each other? Sometimes marketers assume that navigation and menu bars are part of the design process. However, they contribute to the clarity of your message, so you are writing copy and creating content.
(3) Post compelling content in unexpected places with a link back to your site. For example, you can
– post thoughtful comments on other people’s blogs;
– create a Squidoo lens with content you already have; and
– write book reviews for Amazon (a major source of traffic when I had my career strategy site and I still get traffic even from reviews I wrote years ago).
