Spammers are getting more subtle. They’re coming up with trick questions, like, “I can’t seem to figure out how to subscribe to your blog. Can you help?”

Like, duh. There’s a big subscribe link right there.

I use Akismet so most of my spam gets caught before I see it, but occasional messages get through. I can tell if they’re spam first by the return address and sending URL. If it’s a porn site or a heavy sales page….yep, that’s spam.

Then there’s the content. This is where I worry about marking as “spam” a perfectly legal, legitimate visitor. If you’re going to post on someone’s blog, make sure your comment is directly relevant to the post. I’ve seen experienced marketers write generic comments like, “Nice blog. I’ve enjoyed visiting.” I mark those comments “delete” if I recognize the name and “spam” otherwise.

I suspect some of these high-powered marketers have turned their assistants loose to post for them. It doesn’t work.

Recently I saw a really creative piece of spam. The person wrote a long message, commenting on the quality of my blog. Then she (or he, depending on whether the name was a pseudonym) gave it away, saying, ‘But I have to disagree with you. I don’t like affiliate programs.”

So what’s she giving away? A free ebook with links to other sites and a claim, “They’re not affiliate links.” Really? Then my dog really is a princess just waiting for a frog to come and kiss her on the nose.

I’ve written quite a bit about posting to other people’s blogs. Check out my site, HookYourClients.com.

Yes, I have affiliate links all over the place. Please click on them. They’re good products.
