Twitter is such a powerful medium - which means you want to use it with great care.
More mistakes:
(1) Incomplete or incomprehensible messages.
Ever scroll down and see a bunch of tweets that don’t mean anything?
“Great idea.”
“That works for me, especially on a sunny day.”
You just have 140 characters but you can use some of them for a URL that directs readers to your blog post or article.
(2) Forgetting your message might be the 50th your recipient gets that day.
When I take a deep breath and open the “Direct Message” link, typically we see dozens of messages like, “Thanks for the follow.” It’s hard to stand out with a “thank you” message. Instead you’re better off going right to your new friend’s page and sending a public message.
But you risk a backfire when you add a commercial message. “Come get your free gift here.”

Good comment about Thanks for the follow tweets. Sometimes when a large number of new people start following, it is hard to know the best way to respond (and not eat up half your day:)
