So many people are getting advised, “No blog? No big deal. Just comment on someone else’s blog.”
Sounds good. You go to a blog that seems to be more or less related to your topic. You click on the word “comment” or look for some arcane symbol inviting you to comment.
And now’s your challenge. About 90% of comments arriving on a blog are spam. Some of these messages are so yucky I can’t ask my nice, wholesome Virtual Assistant Alicia Rittenhouse to screen them. I can’t pay anyone enough to deal with the insensitive, stomach-churning filth that comes in.
So you have to set up your comment carefully. A quick note like, “Great blog - good ideas” just won’t cut it. As far as I’m concerned, that’s spam.
Take the trouble to read the post. Say a few words to indicate that you’ve actually thought about the post for at least 2 minutes.
After all, you want to communicate something about yourself, right? So showcase your own style and your own expertise. Maybe you’ll disagree with the author. Maybe you’ll have a new example to illustrate the author’s point.
Bottom Line: If you’re not going to take the trouble to respond carefully, don’t bother. You’ll be relegated to spam hell and eventually banned. Or you’ll send the message, “Hey, I am promoting myself!” like a carnival barker.
A little strong? If you’d just gone through 62 spam messages to find just 1, you might feel the same way.
