I used to be the ultimate traveller. In academia, I was known as a conference junkie: I wrote dozens of conference papers because my universities would pay me to go present them. My jobs were chosen based as much on travel budget as anything else.
Now I really hate to travel. I get claustrophic on crowded planes and frustrated with senseless security rules.
Before you label me unpatriotic, I will point out that Frank Abagnale Jr. thinks screening is wasteful. He favors profiling. Abagnale is the author of one of my all-time fave books, Catch Me If You Can. I’ve watched the DVD 3 times. Abagnale was the teenager who impersonated a Pan Am pilot to get prestige, women and money. After serving time in a Federal prison, he became a high-powered security consultant…earning millions of dollars to help companies protect themselves against new versions of his former criminal self.
Abnagale says, “I fly all the time. And I get searched more than I did in prison.”
I did a lot of flying in the era the film depicts so accurately –friendly flight attendants, lots of room on board, friendly people who really believed the mystique. Now you have to push me on a plane with a forklift.
But I just found a really cool blog that I’ll be adding to my blogroll, even though I hate to travel these days. Check out Flying with Fish, a blog by a traveling photographer named (of course) Fish. He’s got awesome tips to get through security faster, save your property while going through the metal detectors (did you know passengers are stealing from each other?) and save money on tickets.
And, he tells us, some airlines are setting up networking opportunities for their passengers. American Airlines has a program specifically for women travelers.
Check out his entry for May 16…and the other topics too.
